Massage manipulations are made up of five main techniques, which are:
- Effleurage
- Petrissage
- Tapotement
- Frictions
- Vibrations
Effleurage is a continuous stroking movement that is applied using the fingers or palm and fingers together to create a sweeping motion. The pressure should be light, and the movement always made towards the heart. Effleurage introduces the client to the therapist’s touch, allows the change from one massage technique to the next, stimulates lymphatic flow, warms and relaxes the tissue and soothes the nerve endings.
Petrissage is a series of movements that lift or press tissues from or against the underlying structures. Pressure can vary and can include several techniques from kneading, picking up, rolling, knuckling or pinching. The benefit of this technique relives the tension within the muscles, improves muscle tone and stimulates cell regeneration. It can also assist with the production of sebum and the removal of waste.
Tapotement is a brisk, light, stimulating movement, which is done by breaking contact with the skin e.g. clapping or tapping of the skin. If a client’s skin were sensitive, you would not incorporate this type of movement into your routine. Tapotement improves skin and muscle tone, stimulates circulation and stimulates the sensory nerve endings.
Friction movements are small movements that should be done with pressure to a localised area by crisscrossing hands or fingers past each other. This also has the benefit of warming the skin. Friction movements can help to break down scar tissue and adhesions, loosen congestion and dead skin cells and relieves tension.
Vibrations are caused by placing hands or fingers on the client’s skin and rapidly moving the arms to create a vibrational movement. This can be relaxing and soothing for the client and stimulates the nerve endings without causing irritation to the skin.
Adapting the facial massage routine:
Sensitive skin
- Use a lighter pressure over the face and neck.
- Spend more time on the neck and shoulders instead of the face.
- Avoid movements such as Tapotement over any areas of sensitivity.
- Use a massage product designed for sensitive skin.
Dry skin
- Use a firmer pressure to stimulate the sebaceous glands.
- Spend extra time with frictions over dry areas to remove dead skin cells.
- Use a massage product designed for dry skin.
Oily skin
- Use a lighter pressure over oily areas.
- Spend more time massaging the face and neck and less time on the face.
- Use friction movements over areas of congestion.
- Massage with a product designed for oily skins.
Mature skin
- Spend extra time massaging over areas that have any visible signs of ageing, especially around the eye area, lip area and jawline.
- If the client has loose skin the best massage movements are vibration, tapotement and effleurage.
- Use a firm pressure to stimulate sebaceous glands.
