Gel polish application on the natural nail
Preparing the natural nail:
You must carefully prepare the natural nail plate before you can apply gel polish.
Sanitise the client’s hands, then thoroughly clean the nail plate of surface debris and oils using a solvent before carrying out any work.
It is not advisable to use varnish remover for this as most of them contain oily conditioners, leaving a residue on the nails.
If a client has not had a manicure or any other nail treatments for some time, the cuticle could be covering part of the nail plate. Removal of this is essential, as the overlay product must bond to a clean nail plate and not to any surrounding cuticle or skin, which would cause the overlay product to lift.
Apply products to soften the cuticle at this stage is not recommended as the nail plate will absorb them, and this may have an adverse effect on the adhesion of the overlay product.
Before applying gel polish, using a cuticle tool is often the most effective way to remove the nail cuticle. Push back the cuticle removing the course parts of the cuticle, then by using the knife side of the cuticle pusher, remove the pterygium.
Gel Polish Application
When using gel polish during a manicure or pedicure, it is important to apply the gel before massage, masks, or hand lotion. Oils on the nail reduce the adhesion of the gel to the nail.
You will need an LED lamp or a multi-bulb lamp of at least 36 watts output.
Always make sure that the client’s hand is fully under the lamp to set.
- Surface shine can be removed with a white buffing block for better adhesion.
- All cuticle should be removed from the nail plate to prevent lifting and shrinking of the gel.
- Remove all dust from the nail surface using a brush or sanitiser.
- Apply a base coat to each nail, including the thumb on the one hand. Cure for 30 seconds LED or 2 minutes UV,
- Whilst the first hand is curing, repeat the process on the second hand.
- Apply the first coat of colour thinly and cap it by running the brush under the free edge,
- Cure for 30 seconds LED or 2 minutes LED
- Repeat on the other hand.
- Apply a second coat of colour.
- Cure for 30 seconds LED or 3 minutes UV
- Repeat on the other hand.
- Apply the top coat and cure for 30 seconds/2 minutes
- Repeat on the other hand.
- Apply cuticle oil to finish.
Gel polish removal
- Remove the top layer of gel polish using a 180-grit file.
- Soak cotton wool in acetone and apply it to the nail, wrapping foil around the cotton wool to keep it wet and trap in heat. Leave for 10-15 minutes.
- Remove one foil at a time and gently scrape the gel polish from the nail using a gel remover tool. Scrape down from the eponychium towards the nail plate.
